En somme, un album 'deluxe' parfait pour qui ne connait pas ou peu ARP et veut se prendre en pleine face son classique mais bon Heavy Mélodique ou puissant, mais pour les autres qui suivent depuis longtemps le groupe, ou plutôt le maestro guitariste, c’est fort de ressortir un album seulement six mois après avoir acheté la version originale de « Into The Storm », début 2014 ; de quoi s’en mordre les doigts étant donné que la version deluxe et ici, décidément bonne de par ses bonus intéressants : commerce quand tu nous tient :)

Eh oui, c’est que comme teaser entre la première partie de la tournée qui vient de s’achever et la seconde à venir dès septembre, cet album fait mouche, surtout de par ses près de 27 minutes de morceaux en live (même s’ils ne sont que trois) qui donnent un furieuse envie d’aller à l’un des concerts de cette seconde partie de la tournée 2014. C’est que sur scène, ARP c’est du tout bon, l’assurance de passer un beau moment, et de faire oublier que sur disque, la même recette est encore et toujours employée : bonne recette, certes, mais à force de toujours manger le même plat à peu de variantes près, on peut parfois se lasser

Ceci n’enlève pourtant rien à la qualité qui a fait la réputation de ARP depuis 25 ans, et en soi, « Into The Storm » est et reste un bon album, avec ses moments forts dont le superbe « Into The Storm », comme toujours chez ARP, un morceau long et choyé par Axel Rudi Pell, la voix unique de Johnny Gioeli et par leurs comparses. Très bon aussi, l’instrumental en bonus track « White Cats(Opus (#6 Scivolare)" ou « Hey Hey My My », « Way To Mandelay », en second bonus. Bobby Rondinelli (Rainbow, Riot, Black Sabbath, notamment) en remplacement de Mike Terrana assure la succession, sans aucun problème, au point de ne pas remarquer le remplacement

Bref, un album qui roule tout seul, trop parfois ? et une version deluxe qui vaut le coup. Enfin, tant qu’en fin de tournée, il ne prend pas l’envie de la ressortir agrémentée de nouveaux bonus, rendant cette version obsolète? Mais bon, ce serait dommage de se priver de cette édition deluxe de fin août 2014 et de se poser trop de questions :)

ACE FREHLEY “Space Invader”

Dans une interview, Ace Frehley déclarait créer ses morceaux afin qu’ils lui plaisent à lui, bien sur, mais aussi à ses fans et le reproche fait, justement par ses mêmes fans concernant le précédent opus, « Anomaly » (2009), était que malgré que celui-ci soit un bon album, il n’était pas assez heavy et manquait de guitares. C’est donc, depuis cet intervalle de cinq ans qui sépare le précédent effort et celui-ci, et avec ces propos restés gravés dans son esprit que Ace Frehley a composé « Space Invader » et bien lui en a pris : les guitares sont, ici en effet, rock à souhait, génialement exécutées, techniques et mélodiques à la fois, un parfait mélange qui met dans le mille à chaque morceau. Ce son et ce feeling très seventies qui animent tout l’album, sont classieux et très agréables ; on se laisse prendre au jeu et voilà que défilent les morceaux sur des riffs efficaces, sur des vocaux bien balancés.

Pour les paroles, entre sexe, faire la fête et le sujet délicieusement 50’s et kitsch de l’espace et des envahisseurs, on savoure. D’ailleurs, le ton est donné par la pochette confiée à non moins que Ken Kelly, son ami de longue date, qui a été, notamment, l’auteur de l’artwork de deux best sellers de Kiss : « Destroyer » (1976) et « Love Gun » (1977) et bien sûr, de ses peintures d'Heroic Fantasy notamment pour « Conan »

Coté production de "Space Invader", c’est nickel là aussi. Bref, le lead guitariste, compositeur bien connu et respecté à juste titre, s’en est donné à cœur joie, faisant, de « Space Invader », un must à posséder. Le meilleur album depuis son premier disque solo « Ace Frehley », sorti en 1978 ? c'est bien possible :) 

Les neuf morceaux originaux assurent, notamment l’immanquable instrumental de 7 minutes « Starship » et même si la reprise du « Space Cowboy » de Steve Miller, aurait mérité plus d’audace, le tout se laisse savourer sans retenue. Après tout, Ace Frehley n’est-il pas le « Space Cowboy » ? ;)

Pas étonnant qu’il ait été honoré via son entrée au Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame en 2014, pour son œuvre avec KISS et qu'en août 2014, les fans aient proclamé "Space Invader", meilleur album du mois: c’est mérité !

 "King Of Man" Review:             /       "King Of Man" : Chronique : 

• Tasunka : You won awards as an ECMA award winning songwriter, won Swedish Idol, your first solo album was nominated for Music Nova Scotia 2011 "Rock Recording of the Year" and went platinum, your singles are played on radios in Sweden, etc…: 

So, did that success bring pressure or enthusiasm when you wrote your second album?

Jay Smith : I think both, but the pressure I put on myself is always greater. I always try to outdo myself.

• How would you introduce yourself as an artist and your music as it shows so many facets?

As a pop musician with a lot of blues and country influences. The making of this second album took a long time and I think it´s because of that and all the phases I went through that made the album so diverse.

• The artwork of “King of Man” is pure Rock Rebel spirit: tattoos, smoking, a real bad boy image different from the first album. 

Was it your idea and was it a way to make people react or pure fun?

The cover of the album was just a pic that came out from a long photo session and I didn´t think of it as rebelling, it´s just something I do without meaning to.

• On your first album there were covers of famous hits from pop to metal. 

So, did you write all the songs for the second album and could “King Of Man” be then seen as your actual first album?

I consider King Of Man as my first solo album, since the first had just one original track that I didn´t write myself. The only song that I haven´t written on King Of Man is the title track. It´s written by Richard Larsson and Alexander Scheele. I heard a demo and I just loved it.

• Can you tell me about the way you write songs?

Well, because I have a background in rock n roll and hard rock. I had to use a lot of different instruments that were new to me, because every time I picked up the guitar a riff came out which reminded me of the music I used to write. So I had to lean towards different instruments like the piano, because I wanted to make music that was far removed from what I´ve done before and in the same instance still be myself.

• What does inspire you when you write songs?

The people I surround myself with often inspire me, I like to have one or two musicians to bounce ideas off. Mostly I it's think because of my past, being a part of a group. I find it hard to write soupy on my own.

• Why this title: “King Of Man” and what are the main themes of the lyrics?

I just thought that it was cool title, and the main themes of the album are:love, death and redemption.

• Which songs of your second album represent you the best as an artist? As there are so many facets in this album and all of them are worth it

I think it's "Tramp of love" and "the Blues" and maybe "women"

• Can you tell me more about “Cowboys From Hell” ?

I have always loved Pantera and I had wanted to record this version for some time. If you listen to Pantera, their music is almost always based on a blues riff deep down any way.

• “King Of man”was produced by Dan Sundquist and sounds in an amazing way. How did you get to have him on board and how was it to work with him?

I actually had two producers on this album, Dan Sundquist and Richard Larsson. They are very different from each other in ways of making music, I learned a lot from both of them.

• How long did it take to record the whole album and where was it recorded?

Approximately a year and a half and it was recorded both in Stockholm and south of Sweden.

• Your voice is unique from smoky, Rock, swinging, touch of jazzy, Blues and so amazing to bring emotions to all of the songs whatever the music you play: did you have singing lessons or is it an instinctive singing with soul and guts?

It´s instinctive singing with soul and guts.

• There are many different instruments on this album: of course, drums, guitar, bass but also piano, hammond, saxophone, etc.. : 

Did you play just guitar or any of the other instruments too?

I didn´t play any of the other instruments. I wrote a lot of the ideas for the album on the piano but I´m not good enough to record, hehe

•  Is ‘Jay Smith’ a band or are you playing with different artists ? Could you introduce them?

The drum tracks where laid down by two drummers, Louisian Boltner and Robert Young. The piano and hammond is mostly recorded by Richard Larsson. Guitars by Pelle Holmberg and bass by Dan Sundquist and Linus Blad.

• In your ‘dream band’, with who would you like to play / sing? Alive or in Heaven I mean :)

That´s a tough question… I would like to have Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, ..) et Jerry Cantrell on the drums, Zakk Wilde (Black Label Society, ..) and Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) on guitar and Mike Inus (Inez – Alice In CHAINS) on the bass.

• Next october you will tour Germany: Are there concerts planned in the rest of Europe and of course France?

It would be then a great pleasure for the French audience to welcome you
I hope to play in all over Europe, but as for now the only tour dates that are set are in Germany.

• “Kings Of man” was released in Scandinavia, last December and now in France in July: what are your expectations for its release in France and Europe ?

Very modest but hopeful.

• What are your plans for the future ? Musically speaking of course :)

I hope to release an EP with a bit of acoustic material I´ve been working on, which has an attendency to lean towards country more than anything else.

• Tasunka : Tu as remporté plusieurs récompenses, en tant que gagnant du prix ECMA récompensant les compositeurs, tu as gagné le Swedish Idol, as été nominé pour l’album Rock de l’année aux Music Nova Scotia 2011 et ton disque s’est vu disque de platine, tes singles tournent sur les ondes en Suède, etc..

Dis-moi, ce succès a-t-il été une source de pression ou d’enthousiasme quand tu as composé ton second album ?

Jay Smith : Les deux, je pense, mais la pression que je me mets est toujours plus importante. J’essaie toujours de me dépasser.

• Comment te présenterais-tu en tant qu’artiste et même chose pour ta musique, étant donné qu’elle est multifacettes ?

Comme un musicien pop bardé d’influences blues et country. Le fait que la réalisation de ce second album ait pris du temps et aussi à cause des étapes que j’ai traversées, le tout a fait, je pense, que ce disque soit aussi diversifié

• La pochette de « King Of Man » te montre avec un esprit rebel du Rock ; avec les tatouages, la fumée de cigarette, en somme une image de ‘bad boy’ différente de la pochette de ton précédent album.

Etait-ce ton idée et une façon de faire réagir les gens ou simplement c’était par pur fun ?

La pochette de l’album est simplement un photo qui est ressortie après une longue session photo et je ne le vois pas comme quelque de l’ordre de la rébellion, c’est seulement une pose, quelque chose que je fais sans y mettre de sens particulier

• Sur ton premier opus figuraient des reprises de hits célèbres allant de la pop au metal. Et pour ce second ? Tu as écrit tous les morceaux et si oui, pourrais-tu dire que « King Of man » est, du coup, vraiment ton premier album ?

Je considère « King Of Man » comme mon premier album solo, étant donné que le précédent n’avait qu’un titre provenant de ma main. Pour « King Of Man », le seul morceau que je n’ai pas écrit est le titre même de l’album : c’est Richard Larsson et Alexander Scheele qui l’ont composé. J’en avais entendu une démo et j’ai tout simplement aimé

• Quelle est ta façon de composer les morceaux ?

Et bien, puisque mon bagage est Rock’n Roll et Hard Rock, j’ai dû utiliser différents instruments, qui étaient nouveaux pour moi. Téant donné qu’à chaque fois que je prenais la guitare, un riff sortait, qui me rappelait la musique que j’avais l’habitude d’écrire. Aussi ai-je dû me tourner vers d’autres instruments diffé&rents, tels que le piano, vu que je voulais créer une musique éloignée de ce que j’avais pu faire auparavant tout restant en même temps fidèle à moi-même

• Qu’est-ce qui t’inspire quand tu te mets à composer ?

Les gens qui m’entourent m’inspirent souvent ; j’aime avoir deux, trois musiciens avec moi, histoire de faire jaillir les idées. La plupart du temps, je pense que cette manière de faire vient de mon passé, d’avoir fait partie d’un groupe. Je trouve difficile d’écrire de la substance, moi seul

• Pourquoi ce titre « King Of man » et quels sont les principaux thèmes dont parlent les paroles ?

Je me suis juste dit que c’était un titre cool et pour ce qui est des sujets principéux : il est question d’amour, de mort et de rédemption

• L’album présente beaucoup de facettes et toutes valent le détour, quels morceaux de ton second disque te représentent le mieux en tant qu’artiste ?

Je pense à « Tramp Of Love » et « The Blues », peut-être aussi « Women »

• Tu pourrais m’en dire plus sur « Cowboys From Hell » ?

J’ai toujours adoré Pantera et ça faisait un moment que je voulais enregistrer cette version. Si tu écoutes Pantera, tu t’aperçois que leur musique est presque toujours basée sur un riff de Blues, bien profond dans tous les cas

• La production de Dan Sundquist sonne de façon incroyable. Comment s’est-il retrouvé embarqué dans l’hirstoire et comment c’était de travailler avec lui ?

J’ai eu deux producteurs, en réalité sur cet album : Dan Sundquist et Ricahrd Larsson. Ils sont très différents l’un de l’autre dans leur manière de faire de la musique et j’ai appris beaucoup de tous les deux

• Combien de temps a pris l’enregistrement de l'album et où cela s’est-il passé ?

Cela a pris approximativement un an et demi et a été enregistré à la fois à Stockholm et dans le sud de la Suède

• Ta voix est unique, allant de rugueuse, rock, swing, avec une pointe de jazz ou encore de Blues et le tout en apportant beaucoup d’émotions à chaque titre, quellle que soit son atmopshère : tu as pris des cours de chant ou est-ce dû à une façon de chanter instinctive et avec tes tripes et ton âme ?

Comme tu dis, ma façon de chanter vient bien des tripes et de l’âme

• On peut entendre différents instruments sur l’album ; bien sûr des guitare, basse, batterie, mais aussi du piano, hammond, saxophone, etc… Tu joue juste de la guitare ou aussi un ou plusieurs des autres instruments ?

Aucun des autres instruments. J’ai composé beaucoup des idées sur un piano, mais je ne suis pas assez bon pour ce qui est de passer à l’enregistrement, hehe !

• 'Jay Smith', c’est un groupe à part entière ou tu joues avec différents artistes ? Si oui, pourrais-tu les présenter ?

Les pistes batterie ont été posées par deux batteurs : Louisian Boltner et Robert Young. La plupart des enregostrements piano et hammond sont dûs à Richard Larsson, les guitares à Pelle Holmberg et la basse à Dan Sundquist et Linus Blad

• Quel serait ton groupe de rêve, les musiciens vivants ou au paradis, avec qui tu aimerais jouer ?

C’est une question difficile…J’aimerais avoir Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, ..) à la batterie, Zakk Wilde (Black Label Society, ..) et Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) à la guitare et Mike Inus (Inez – Alice In Chains)à la basse

• En octobre prochain, tu vas tourner en Allemagne ; est-ce qu’il est prévu de faire aussi des concerts dans le reste de l’Europe et bien sur, en France ? Le public français serait ravi de t’accueillir

J’espère pouvour jouer partout en Europe mais pour l’instant, les seules dates de tournée prévues, sont en Allemagne

•  " King Of Man " est sorti en décembre 2013 en Scandinavie et ici, en juillet 2014: quelles sont tes attentes pour cette sortie en France et en Europe?

Très modeste et plein d’espoir

• Musicalement parlant, quels sont tes futurs projets ?

J’espère sortir un EP avec un peu de compostion acoustique sur lequel j’ai travaillé et qui a tendance à pencher plus vers la Country que vers n’importe quoi d’autre

This second album of Jay Smith being actually his first one as this time he wrote all the songs except for « King Of Man » song, it gives you a good surprise. All through this “King Of Man” that has already been released in Scandinavia last December and this summer 2014 in Europe and France, can be heard how skilled and inspired this Swedish guitarist – songwriter – singer is.
He proves it especially on the diverse, interesting and catchy following tracks that are the very good « Keep Your Troubles At Quay », the surprising « Ode To Death (Little Sister) » which both mix swing and Rock that sounds like 50’s-60’s, mix saxophone and hammond, and last but not least the surprising and so good vocals groovy, a real anthem, with angel like choir
